Rueda

The Rueda Denomination of Origin was created in January 1980 and was the first D.O. recognized in the Autonomous Community of Castilla y León, after several years of effort and work to protect the autochthonous variety of this region, the Verdejo grape. The Rueda Denomination of Origin covers the provinces of Valladolid, Segovia and Ávila. In total, 72 municipalities with their own culture and wine tradition.

The different varieties of cultivated grapes are distributed irregularly by the different municipal terms that made up Rueda D. O. However, the vineyard reaches its highest concentration and intensity in the populations of La Seca, Rueda and Serrada. The character of Rueda is defined by three elements: its climate, its soils and its autochthonous variety, the Verdejo.

Its climate is determined by its altitude, between 700 and 800 meters above sea level, which makes it continental. Their flat but high land supports very cold and long winters, short springs with late frosts and hot, dry summers, only altered by untimely storms. In general, the rains are scarce and the hours of insolation abound, which would be excessive if it were not for the late maturation of the grape. The difference in temperature between day and night is the secret of the balance between the sugar that the grape makes with the sun and the acidity it does not get lost during the night hours. The characteristic and typical soils of this D.O. are called gravelly soils, easy to till with aeration, permeable and healthy, located in the depression that forms the Douro River with large terraces.
