Ballantine's is a brand created by George Ballantine, who earned his reputation as a master whisky mixer, a profession he started when he was only 19 years old. In 1895, his family business, George Ballantine & Son had a great reputation as the highest quality whisky mixer. In 1910 they launched Finest, their first whisky.

After World War I, and after a 13-year whisky ban, Ballantine's had aged whiskies in its cellar that had been unable to sell. From those whiskies came the 17 year, a unique jewel up to that moment within the big brands that opened the way to a new range of whisky. It is the most awarded whisky in the world so far.

The shape of its bottle has a story behind it. During the years of the ban in the United States, a square bottle was designed so that it would fit in vendors' briefcases, without rolling or making noise, to hide them in the event of a raid without attracting attention. Today, that bottle shape remains as a hallmark of the brand.

Since 2005 the brand has been owned by the Pernod Ricard company. Still, much of the production remains in the original village, Dumbarton.

The shield that appears on all Ballantine's bottles represents the Scottish flag along with the four most important ingredients for making a good Scottish whisky: barley, water, stills for distillation and oak barrels.
