This liqueur was created in the Cointreau family's distillery in 1875, in the village of Saint-Barthélemy-d'Anjou, in the French region of Pays de la Loire.

Cointreau is made from orange peels. This liqueur is high grade, obtained from the distillation of orange peel varieties and diverse provenances, both sweet and bitter, which are dried in the sun, macerated and distilled in copper stills resulting in an essential oil which gives the liqueur an intense and very natural aroma, between sweet and bitter.

Then, this essential oil is mixed with alcohol, water, sugar and spices, but it is difficult to know the percentage, since the secret of its preparation and composition has been kept for more than 130 years.
